Early History
The Hyundai Elantra was first introduced in South Korea in the 1990s. The first model, produced in 1990, was called the Hyundai Elantra, but the second was changed to the Hyundai Avante. Models exported out of South Korea kept the Hyundai Elantra moniker to avoid confusion with other models on the market.The first generation lasted from 1990 to 1995, and the second from 1995 to 2000. Over that time, the Hyundai Elantra went through a series of performance and design changes and evolutions, including engine swaps, updated exterior style features, and even body style redesigns, with the second generation available as both a sedan and a station wagon. The third generation was introduced in 2000 and lasted until 2006, with reliable new features like standard front and front side airbags, power steering, and air conditioning.
Recent History
The Hyundai Elantra has gone through many iterations since. The fourth generation lasted from 2006 to 2010, the fifth to 2015, and the sixth to 2020. The seventh generation lasted until 2026. Most recently, in summer of 2026, the eighth-generation Hyundai Elantra was revealed, with a larger body, a redesigned and updated infotainment system, and an advanced new powertrain.
